Cleaner, Safer, Greener
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) was created as a central department in its own right in May 2002 and brings together key responsibilities for regional and local government classified as fire, housing, planning and regeneration. The ODPM has developed a number of initiatives that focus on green space and now has policy responsibility for a range of 'cleaner, safer, greener' initiatives (see 'Living Places Cleaner, Safer, Greener', ODPM, 2002). It works closely with a range of organisations agencies and Government departments in the delivery of 'liveability' objectives. 'Cleaner, Safer Greener' communities are attractive, well-designed, well-used and well cared for streets, squares, parks and green spaces that foster a pride of place and improve everyone's quality of life.
The government's priorities are to:
- Improve the physical fabric and infrastructure of the urban environment
- Make places cleaner and maintain them better
- Make places safer and tackle anti-social behaviour
- Cater for children, young people and families
- Engage and empower local people and communities
The ODPM has recently produced the first in a series of 'How To' Guides which are aimed at planners, local authorities and those involved in health, housing, policing to assist them in delivering the cleaner, safer, greener agenda.
The three guides are:
- How to Manage Town Centres (click here to view the guide)
- How to Improve Residential Areas (click here to view the guide)
- How to Create Quality Parks and Open Spaces (click here to view the guide)
