- New Green Space public consultation launched - May 2006
The 'Outdoors for All?' Action Plan, run by the Countryside Agency on behalf of Defra, is aiming to boost the number of young people, people with disabilities and those from ethnic minorities make use of outdoor recreational activities over the next ten years.
The draft plan is based on findings from the Diversity Review that showed the positive impact of the outdoors on people from the target groups, and it outlines new ways of working with outdoor organisations to increase participation.
"The Action Plan is all about working in partnership to show what the British countryside has to offer everyone. People are not making the most of even their local urban green spaces never mind the wider countryside. We need to know why and what we can do to encourage them", said Biodiversity Minister Barry Gardiner, launching the consultation at the Queen Elizabeth Conference Centre this week.
"Being outdoors brings so many benefits -
from a sense of well being and inspiration, to exercise and learning about the natural environment. I am determined that we should do everything possible to give people of all ages and from all walks of life equal opportunity to enjoy and benefit from outdoor activities" added the Biodiversity Minister. - New report for Joseph Rowntree Foundation on environmental problems and service provision in deprived neighbourhoods - November 2005
Residents in deprived neighbourhoods are getting lower standards of street cleaning and refuse collection services than residents in more affluent areas, according to research for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. This is in spite of the greater range and severity of problems they face, particularly regarding graffiti, litter, fly-tipping, and poorly maintained public spaces.
The study, by the University of Glasgow for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, found environmental services staff working in deprived neighbourhoods were overwhelmed by persistently high levels of rubbish and litter. Accoring to the report, Local Authorities do not routinely deploy services and resources which are sufficient to meet the needs of such neighbourhoods. This is due to difficulty in negotiating between these needs and the competing and well articulated demands from residents of better off neighbourhoods.
